2012 Informational meeting

Preseason: Tryouts for all girls soccer players begin on Saturday, August 25 at 8 am on the NHS track.  All prospective student-athletes should arrive by 7:45 am with their completed medical forms and physical form.  Per NHS policy, no player without these forms will be allowed to tryout.

Background: The NHS girl’s soccer program offers three levels of participation- varsity, junior varsity, and freshman.  Playing time on the varsity level is based on ability and is not guaranteed.  Every player plays on the junior varsity level, but is not guaranteed even playing time.  Freshman student-athletes all play equally.  Players are placed on a team commensurate with their ability based upon tryout performance.

Summer Preparation program: The success of the NHS girl’s soccer program is, in large part, due to the off season preparation of our student-athletes.  To that end, we offer a variety of opportunities to help get ready for the season.  Participation is not mandatory, and in no way affects a player’s ability to make any team.

Newtown Nighthawks 8th grade camp: Run by Girl’s Soccer Coach Kenney and Boy’s Soccer Coach Brian Neumeyer, this camp helps rising freshman the opportunity to get to know the coaches and to get familiar with the training routines of each program (application attached).   This program runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7:30 pm.  Starts July 10-August 9.

Lady Nighthawks Offseason Conditioning and ACL prevention: This camp, run by NHS Athletic trainer Sabrina Byrne, consists of aerobic conditioning, plyometrics, agility, and speed workouts designed to meet the physical demands of soccer and to prevent injuries common to female athletes. Tuesday and Thursday mornings (July 17-August 9). Registration through Park and Recreation (Activity 408603).  Cost: $180.

Be A Player Preseason Camp: This camp, run by Coach Neumeyer, prepares female student-athletes for the demands of the upcoming preseason and the Nighthawks’ SWC regular-season, post-season, and CIAC tournament schedules.  It is highly intensive and focuses on skill-development, fitness, and team building activities. Sunday, August 19-Wednesday, August 22.  5-7 pm. Cost $150.

Commitment: Besides the daily practice/game schedule, the NHS Girl’s soccer program does many volunteer community activities, team-building activities, and fund raising activities.  These are considered part of our program, and to be considered mandatory aspects.

Closing: The Newtown Girl’s Soccer program has enjoyed continued success through the never-ending focus, determination, and hard work of our fine student-athletes.  Besides the many NSCAA All-American, All-New England, All State, and SWC players who have come through our program, we are equally pleased to count many SWC All-Academic performers as well (In 2011, 14 of our 22 players were selected).  Newtown Girl’s Soccer promotes competitive fair play and sportsmanship in a close-knit family environment.  Best wishes as you begin preparation for our upcoming season.

We look forward to an outstanding 2012 campaign!
